Dotara Performer

Music runs in the blood of every villager in North Bengal and Nita Roy of Cooch Behar is no exception. Born in 1985, Nita Roy was encouraged by her father, Sachindranath Roy, a music enthusiast, to learn the dotara from a very young age. She was in class VI when she started her training under Lokoman Hakim of Goshanimari in Dinhata subdivision of Cooch Behar district. She trained for 20 years and has been performing publicly since she was 15. A B-graded radio artiste, Nita is invited to perform regularly throughout the year and has performed across West Bengal. At the invitation of the late folk music collector, Kali Dasgupta, she performed at the Kala Mandir auditorium in Kolkata some years ago. She has also trained numerous students.

While dotara playing is her passion, college educated Nita is a trained nurse and works at a local hospital.
