Exploring Sohrai Wall Art traditions in Purulia with a focus on Santal practices

The harvest festival of Sohrai is the most important festival of the Santals.

Having worked with the Santals for the past couple of years, we were fascinated by the amazing wall art of this community, created primarily for Sohrai.

Starting in October 2016, to coincide with the first occurrence of Sohrai that year, we worked on documenting this art, funded by a grant from the Anthropological Survey of India, Govt of India, Ministry of Culture, under the Scheme of “Assistance to State Governments, Institutions and Organizations for Documentation and Dissemination of Research Results in the field of Anthropology”, 2016-17.

The project was completed in September 2017.
