Short excerpts from a Dang Putul (Rod Puppet) performance, "Nirbachito Bibhishon" by Mahakali Putul Naach party of South 24 Parganas district at a folk festival in Kolkata. Bibhishon is Ravan`s brother and Nirbachito means selected in Bengali, referring to Ravan selecting Bibhishon to help him carry out his misdeed. The story is based on the Ramayan. The actual performance from which this video was put together was about an hour long. This was in itself an adaptation from a longer 3 hour play entitled Purushottam, written by Brojendra Deb about 40 years ago. The performance style and costumes are completely based on the hugely popular "jatra" theatre form.
